Posting Summary:

Under the supervision and control of a Pathologist, the Autopsy Assistant performs and assists with basic dissection, including identification and preparation of the body of the body, eviscerations, weighing and dissections of trunk organs, cleaning and closing the body, morgue cleaning and maintenance and other duties as required.


  • Baccalaureate degree in biological sciences, allied health sciences or related degree.
  • Pathologist’s Assistant Program preferred.
  • One to two years’ experience as an Autopsy Assistant.
  • Medical-Legal autopsy experience preferred
  • Demonstrated ability to perform basic autopsy dissection
  • Physical ability and knowledge of how to move, lift and turn human bodies or portions of bodies including visceral organs for pathological examination
  • Demonstrated ability to maneuver cadavers appropriately prior to and during post-mortem examinations.
  • Basic knowledge of human anatomy, macrosurgical techniques and general laboratory skills.
  • Knowledge of Infection Control and biohazards requirements and the required safety precautions and awareness of the Occupational Health and Safety Act to maintain safety of self and others.
  • Working knowledge of quality and risk management practices as it pertains to the profession.
  • Provide assistance to pathologists in a timely and quality manner.
  • Proficiency in maintaining records, use of electronic communication tools and software.
  • Proven ability to take initiative and prioritize work.
  • Knowledge of the requirements of the justice system related to handling forensic evidence and samples to maintain continuity of evidence
  • Computer literacy in a Windows environment utilizing Word, and Excel.
  • Proven attendance record.
  • Ability to perform the essential duties of the job.
