About Us - Our Performance - Central Line Bloodstream Infection (CLI) - Reporting

Twitter

Question: What is being reported?

Answer: Central Line Bloodstream Infection (CLI-BSI) rates will be posted on the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care Website and on the Mackenzie Health Website as of April 30th, 2009. The first reporting period will cover the months of January, February and March 2009.

Although we enter our data into CCIS (Critical Care Information System - a centralized data collection system for critical care information) on a daily basis, reporting will occur on a quarterly basis to the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care. The quarterly report is available on the Ministry's website: www.ontario.ca/patientsafety. We will also post the quarterly CLI rates and case count data on the Mackenzie Health website every three months.

The ministry will report and post on its website by hospital site:

  • The number of CLI cases that developed in the ICU in each hospital site. Where the number is zero (0) or where the cases total five (5) or more associated with that hospital site, the number will be posted. If the cases are fewer than 5 (i.e., 1 to 4 cases), it will state "<5 cases".
  • The CLI rate (per 1000 central line days)

Question: How are CLI-BSI rates calculated?

Answer: Only hospitals with Intensive Care Units (ICUs) are required to report the CLI indicator data. This is because patients in the ICU are more likely to have a central line in place. Ontario hospitals are posting quarterly CLI rate and case count for infections acquired in their facility, using the following formula:

total number of ICU related BSIs after 48 hours of central line placement X 1000 total number of central line days for ICU patients 18 years and older See the Central Line-associated Blood Stream Infection Rate Reporting Fact Sheet for more information.
