Mackenzie Health’s Intensive Care Unit (ICU)

To contact the ICU, please call 905-883-1212 ext. 2116

The ICU meets the needs of patients requiring life support measures such as heart monitoring, dialysis and breathing machines. Patients admitted to the ICU are under the care of an Intensivist (a physician who specializes in the care of critically ill patients) and a team of highly experienced Registered Nurses, Pharmacists, Respiratory Therapists, Dietitians, Social Workers and Physiotherapists.

We encourage family members to take home a patient’s personal items as we are not responsible for lost or stolen articles.

Visiting the ICU

Location

The ICU is on the 5th floor of the D-Wing. For the safety of our patients, access to the unit is restricted. To enter, speak with a volunteer at the desk outside the ICU, or request entry using the telephone located on the desk.

Elevators to the ICU – After Hours

The elevators across from the Emergency Department entrance on the 2nd floor (D-wing) are locked from 10:30 p.m. until 6:00 a.m. If you need to come to the ICU during this time, please go to the Emergency Department and call security at extension 6666 for assistance. The phone is located next to the triage desk.

Visiting Guidelines

We welcome you to be with your loved one during their stay in ICU. As such, you are free to visit at any time.

For patient privacy, we may request that you kindly wait in the waiting rooms in the following situations:

  • At shift change when the nurses are transferring care and completing their patient assessments (7:00 a.m. to 8:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.)
  • When the team is performing procedures or personal care.

Visitors are encouraged to stay inside the patient’s room or in the waiting areas. Standing in the ICU hallway is not permitted.

Family members may only stay overnight in the ICU waiting rooms, but not in the patient’s room.

We thank you for supporting and maintaining the privacy and confidentiality of all our patients.

Number of Visitors

To allow patients to rest, to control the spread of disease, and to provide space for nursing care, we allow no more than two (2) family members at patient’s bedside at a given time. This is in keeping with best practice guidelines.

Young children are discouraged from visiting. Speak with the nurse to see if it is appropriate for a child to visit. Children must be supervised closely given the specialized equipment in the room.

Mobile Devices

Feel free to use your cell phone or other mobile device in the ICU. However, be mindful and respectful of others around you.

Photography and audio/video recordings are NOT permitted without prior consent of ICU staff in order to maintain privacy and confidentiality.

Food and Drink

Food and drinks can be found at Tim Horton’s (main floor, B-Wing), vending machines (D-Wing, outside Emergency Department entrance) and cafeteria (main lobby, C-Wing)

Food and drinks are not permitted inside the patient’s room due to infection control practices.
