Patient Care Services - Woman and Child - Newborn and Child services - Pediatric Urgent Care Clinic

Mackenzie Health is pleased to offer a Pediatric Urgent Care Clinic (PUCC) for children requiring more urgent pediatric consultation. This is an acute care clinic, which enables physicians, or midwives to refer acutely ill children to the Pediatrician on Call, where they are seen directly without the need to visit the Emergency Department.  The PUC Clinic also sees referrals from the Emergency Department.

The PUC Clinic is located on D-Wing Level 4, in the Pediatric Department. Here, children are assessed in a very timely manner, and further testing and/or treatment is started as quickly as possible. The PUCC team consists of a pediatric nurse and the Pediatrician on Call.

How does the PUC Clinic work?

The PUC clinic sees children with pediatric problems including asthma, jaundice, abdominal pain, vomiting, and dehydration. The PUC Clinic is able to do bloodwork, provide IV rehydration, and can facilitate timely access to investigations such as x-rays or ultrasounds.

To refer patients:

Referrals to the PUCC Clinic can be made by a physician or midwife by calling the pediatrician on call or by calling the clinic directly.

The child is first seen by the PUCC nurse, and then the pediatrician. Treatment or further testing may be ordered. Following initial assessment and/or treatment, the child is reassessed, and a decision is made whether to discharge home or to admit to hospital. The PUC Clinic helps transition children from physician’s office, to hospital if needed and/or home.

For further information, please contact (905) 883-1212 ext. 4957.
