On April 4, Mackenzie Health opened, a new Transitional Care Unit (Unit 4) East with 12 net new inpatient medicine beds to support transitional care. This new unit builds on the capacity of our existing transitional care unit (TCU) of 12 beds that open and close daily. The unit is based on a new model of care focusing on the patient population with COPD and Pneumonia. Specialized anesthesia and respirology support on the unit provides immediate assessment and transfer of patients being cared for on the unit to the pulmonary rehab clinic, thereby reducing length of stay in hospital. The success of this project will bring positive results to our quality metrics and advance our vision of creating a world class health experience.
