Across the entire organization, Mackenzie Health values what matters to our patients and families. And to deliver excellent quality care to every patient, every time, we need to know what is important to our patients. The Mental Health Unit at Mackenzie Health has embraced these priorities and implemented a community group for nursing staff and patients,
where patients share with staff what matters to them each day.
The impact of the group has been immediate. For example, when a patient stated being in “need of companionship,” the nurse spent extra time with the patient and encouraged her to meet the other clients and join in on the groups. The additional support improved the patient’s mental state significantly – she became happier and more relaxed.
Since the inception of the community group in August 2016, the feedback received from the patients and the staff has been overwhelmingly positive.
