Volunteering at Mackenzie Health provided me with some of the best hands-on experiences within a healthcare setting. Originally going in to complete my 40 hours for my high school diploma, I ended up spending three years in different departments within the organization - ranging from SPD, pharmacy, film library and front desk. Spending time here was a wonderful way to experience the flow of different departments and overall culture of a healthcare organization. Not just that, it was a great way to interact one on one with staff and patients. The skill sets gained were not just helpful in terms of work related experience but also resulted in the development of high emotional intelligence. I would like to thank Mackenzie Health for giving me the opportunity to participate in its organization’s activities which have allowed me to be where I am today.
Administrative Resident, Strategy and Redevelopment
Inspired by a good friend’s example, I applied to volunteer at Mackenzie Health shortly after my retirement and was assigned to a clerical position in the Volunteer Office. It was a perfect fit – accommodating my limited mobility while allowing me to put my business administration and computer skills to good use. Over time, I also joined the Volunteer Association’s Membership Committee and Board of Directors, and became a Community Member on the hospital Research Ethics Board. Combined with my in-service volunteer shift, I cannot envision a more enjoyable and rewarding way to make a difference in the community.
After receiving treatment as a patient at York Central Hospital, I decided that I wanted to give something back to the place that had given me excellent and compassionate care. I met with the staff in the Volunteer & Community Resources Department and they placed me as a volunteer escort. This was a great position that allowed me to help all sorts of patients and visitors. At the same time I made many new friendships that have truly enhanced my life. Since starting my volunteer position, I have worked in a number of different areas of the hospital and helped with many special events. I can’t imagine a better way to give of my time.
