Mackenzie Health is expanding to meet the growing health care demands of the Vaughan region, one of the fastest-growing communities in Canada. Mackenzie Health’s new Vaughan Hospital project is the beginning of Mackenzie Health’s plans to grow into a regional health system.
There are five stages in the capital planning process:
- Proposal
- Functional Program
- Block Schematics and Project Specific Output Specifications
- Competitive Tendering Process
- Design and Construction
Mackenzie Health submitted its Stage One proposal to the Ontario government in April 2011. In August 2011, the government announced support for the construction of a new hospital in Vaughan as part of Building Together, a multi-year infrastructure investment plan.
By December 2011, Ontario granted approval for Mackenzie Health to proceed to Stage Two. The Stage Two plan was submitted to the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care earlier this year, allowing Mackenzie Health to further define the types of programs and services the hospital will provide. More detailed architectural plans for the facility will be based on design requirements related to patient volumes and staffing needs. These data will help to prepare specifications and tender documents to be released in Stage Four.
Ontario’s additional $49.7 million capital investment in the project assists with the planning and design of the facility. Throughout the planning process, key stakeholders including patients, community members, hospital staff, health partners and community groups, will be invited to provide their input.
Mackenzie Health’s Vaughan Hospital project has been assigned to Infrastructure Ontario to deliver using the Alternative Financing and Procurement model. This model ensures that the new hospital will be delivered on time and on budget.
Under Building Together, Ontario is providing grants to 11 hospitals to assist with the planning and design costs associated with their capital projects.
