Critical Care Unit (CCU)

There are two Critical Care units at Mackenzie Health:  one located at Mackenzie Health Richmond Hill and one located at at Cortellucci Vaughan Hospital. There are 51 Critical Care beds between the 2 sites and a 12 bed long stay referral based program for Critical Care Recovery. The Critical care unit is a level 2 and 3 medical/surgical unit that also support coronary care needs, stroke recovery and renal dialysis.

The Critical Care team provides care for patients who are Critically ill and may require continuous cardiac monitoring, respiratory support through a mechanical ventilatory, life saving medications which require continuous monitoring. As a regional dialysis center, the Critical Care unit is able to provide dialysis for our critically ill patients.

Patients admitted to Critical Care Unit are under the care of an intensivist (a physician who specializes in the care of critically ill patients) or a cardiologist, and a team of highly experienced registered nurses, pharmacists, respiratory therapists, dietitians, social workers and physiotherapists.

Family members should take personal items home for patients as Mackenzie Health is not responsible for lost or stolen items.

Visiting guidelines for ICU

*Current visiting guidelines are based on visitor guidance provided by the Government of Ontario. Please note that visitor access may change based on updated visitor guidelines or direction received.

Visiting hours in the hospital are from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. seven days a week. During shift change between 0700-0800 and 1900-2000 visitors may be asked to wait in the waiting room to allow for the team to focus on the handover and the patient. If you remain, we ask that you do not disturb the team unless it is an urgent situation.

Be supportive to the team if you are asked to leave the room for a little while. The health care team often needs space and privacy to provide the best care for your loved one. This is a normal part of care. The Team will let you know when you can return to the room.

Critical Care allows a maximum of two designated visitors per patient at a time. Please check with the Critical Care team on arrival as this may change due to the patient's condition.

Try not to bring children under the age of 12 into the unit. The Critical care unit can be a scary place for young children. It may be hard to understand what is happening around them. However, children may visit if an adult is with them at all times. Please speak with the nurse before you bring a child in to visit.

We recommend you reserve visiting to immediate family members to reduce to allow the patient the opportunity to recovery

If visitors are required to leave the patient’s room, please do not wait outside the room, The hallways need to stay clear so that Clinicians and patients can pass through safely. The Health care team needs to reach your loved one and other patients quickly in case of emergency. Visitors can wait in the visitor lounge within the unit or in the Critical Care waiting area. Staff will direct visitors as to where they can wait.

End of life visiting

If your loved one is considered to be at end of life, the Critical Care team will allow exceptions to the visitor guidelines. This is reviewed case by case by the LCinical team.. If additional visitors are permitted entry, please note that only two visitors may enter the unit at a time. Visiting for multiple family members will be coordinated by the Critical Care team.

After hours

After hours access can be provided to visitors (one over-night visitor per patient) at the discretion of the Critical Care team.

Mobile Devices

Feel free to use your cell phone or other mobile device in the Critical Care areas. However, be mindful and respectful of others around you.

Photography and audio/video recordings are NOT permitted without prior consent of Critical Care staff in order to maintain privacy and confidentiality.

Food and Drink

No food or drinks are permitted in the Critical Care areas.

At Mackenzie Richmond Hill Hospital, food and drinks can be found at Tim Horton's (main floor, B-wing), vending machines (D-wing, outside Emergency Department entrance) and cafeteria (main lobby, C-wing)

At Cortellucci Vaughan Hospital, food and drinks can be found in the cafeteria on level 0 and in vending machines located throughout the hospital.

The Critical Care Recovery unit is a 12-bed unit at Cortellucci Vaughan Hospital designated for long-stay critical care patients who are on their road to recovery.

With government funding for a three-year pilot program, Mackenzie Health is one of only two hospitals in the GTA that will receive patient referrals from other hospitals across the region. The unit will support patients from across the region who are expected to recover once they have passed the most critical phase of their care, but still need help breathing on their own. As home to the York Region Chronic Kidney Disease Program, Mackenzie Health is also uniquely suited to care for patients who also require renal dialysis support.

Our goal is to help advance your recovery journey out of critical care with the ultimate goal of seeing you go home to your family and loved ones.
